Taking care of the environment

At Kal Tire, every team member and every operation is a part of our path to sustainability.

Our commitment to the environment includes extending the life of the products we sell and diverting waste from landfills as well as reducing our energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

You’ll see us cutting our carbon footprint with every customer’s tire we retread, every scrap tire we collect and recycle, and every energy-efficient light we turn off. These are just a few of the big initiatives Kal Tire is undertaking as part of a commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.

We think it’s important to do the little, everyday things too—recycling, using less paper, shutting off equipment, and cleaning with earth-friendly products. Team members are always encouraged to conserve resources.

At Kal Tire, we know how important it is to help keep the earth clean, and we’ve pledged to continue doing our part.

Recycling tires

We participate in all provincial tire recycling programs where we do business, acting as scrap tire drop-off points and working with tire stewardship programs to ensure tires are recycled into everything from rubber mats to playground surfaces.

Retreading tires

As Canada’s largest retreading company, we help commercial truck customers reduce costs and their carbon footprint by applying a new tread to the casing of their used tires. Each time we retread a tire, we save almost 57 litres of oil compared to manufacturing a new tire.

Reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions

As part of our commitment to using less energy and emitting less CO2, we measured the carbon footprint of our Canadian operations, which revealed electricity is our greatest source of emissions. As a result, we designed an energy efficient corporate office and retrofitted the lighting systems in our retread plants. We continue to look for ways to conserve energy in our other facilities.

Diverting waste from the landfill

To help keep waste out of landfills, we’ve been working with a third-party waste management company since 2008. In 2013, we conducted waste audits at 29 Canadian facilities to understand how we can better manage our waste.

Kal Tire Aim 7

Our aim is to continuously improve every aspect of our company, recognizing our responsibility to our customers, each other, our communities and the environment.

Kal Tire’s Environmental Policy

Did you know?

In 2013, we retreaded nearly 400,000 truck tires in Canada and saved more than 22 million litres of oil.

Along with provincial tire stewardship programs, Kal Tire has helped recycle more than 3 million tires.
